No Brasil, a instituição do Dia Nacional de Ação de Graças deve-se ao embaixador brasileiro Joaquim Nabuco que ao participar em Washington (Estados Unidos), da celebração desta festividade, assim se expressou: “Eu quisera que toda a humanidade se unisse, num mesmo dia, para um universal agradecimento a Deus”. O desejo do embaixador de então começou a efetivar-se no Brasil, com a aprovação pelo Congresso Nacional, da Lei 781, no governo do Presidente Eurico Dutra, estabelecendo a última quinta-feira do mês de novembro como o Dia Nacional de Ação de Graças, posteriormente alterado para a quinta-feira da quarta semana do mês de novembro de cada ano, coincidindo assim com a data celebrada em outros países.

É uma comemoração um tanto quanto esquecida, lembro-me na minha infância, na cidade de Piracaia (SP) que neste dia reunia-se na Igreja Matriz da cidade, as autoridades civis, militares, judiciais e religiosas (padres e pastores), e no interior do templo com grande número de fiéis era celebrada a Eucaristia solene presidida pelo então padre local. Hoje, penso que raramente é lembrada tal data, mas independentemente dessa festa e da grande força simbólica que reside no desejo de congregar toda humanidade numa mesma data, mobilizada pelos mesmos sentimentos e atitudes, ao menos, lendo este artigo possamos agradecer e sentir que a esperança é a força motriz da mudança. Além disso, é sempre bom olharmos para trás e vermos que caminhamos, talvez nos mesmos caminhos... Mas tudo bem, a terra é redonda e o céu é sempre novo a cada dia, a cada instante, ele é sempre o mesmo ainda que outro. O labirinto mais perigoso é a linha reta. Portanto, revisar é importante. Mirar as estrelas, os sóis de todo o dia. Mas não seguir em linha reta. Tudo o que é vivo não é reto. Desviar, circundar, dar a volta, contornar, contemplar. Representantes e dirigentes esportivos de vários países da América propuseram a realização de um evento que pudesse envolver todos os países do continente americano.  A ideia de realizar uma competição nos moldes das Olimpíadas entre as Américas surgiu, evidentemente, com o surgimento dos Jogos Olímpicos.No I Congresso Esportivo Pan-Americano, realizado em 1940 na cidade de Buenos Aires, ficou definido que o primeiro evento deste tipo aconteceria na Argentina em 1942. Porém, com o desenrolar da Segunda Guerra Mundial, o evento foi cancelado, assim como aconteceu com as Copas do Mundo de Futebol de 1942 e 1946.
